Q: Why should I visit an orthodontist?

A: An orthodontist receives two to three extra years of training in an orthodontic residency program after completing dental school. They’re specialists in diagnosing, preventing and treating abnormalities in the alignment of the teeth and jaw. An orthodontist has the expertise and knowledge to give you fantastic results that will last a lifetime.

Q: What is a malocclusion?

A: Malocclusion is orthodontist-speak for an improper bite. It can be due to dental or skeletal issues. Spacing, crowding, overbites, underbites and crossbites are all types of malocclusion. An orthodontist is an expert in diagnosing and treating malocclusion using appliances like Invisalign and braces.

Q: What’s the best age to visit an orthodontist?

A: It’s great to see an orthodontist at any age if you want to improve your smile. Braces and Invisalign aren’t exclusive to children and teens and more than one in five orthodontic patients are over the age of 21. However, the American Association of Orthodontists recommends children first see an orthodontist by age seven to have their bite evaluated. While this is usually just an observational period, it ensures that if early intervention is necessary, we can step in and direct the growth and development of the jaw and teeth to prevent the need for surgery, extractions or lengthy treatment down the road.

Q: What happens if I put off orthodontic treatment?

A: Unfortunately, your teeth and jaw won’t just straighten out as you get older and malocclusion tends to worsen with age. Though we can still help you achieve amazing results as an adult, seeking orthodontic treatment as a child or teenager when the teeth and jaw are still growing and developing, increases the likelihood that treatment will be easier and quicker. In some cases, putting off necessary treatment will lead to needing extractions or jaw surgery to achieve results.

Q: What are the benefits of orthodontic treatment?

A: Straight teeth and an aligned bite can give your oral health – and your overall health – a major boost. Some of the benefits of orthodontic treatment include:

  • Making teeth easier to brush and floss, decreasing the risk of tooth decay and gum disease
  • Preventing uneven wear and erosion of the tooth enamel
  • Alleviating teeth grinding
  • Improving your ability to chew, speak and breathe for better overall health
  • Reducing jaw bone loss, which in turn helps prevent tooth loss and pain
  • Distributing the bite forces evenly to alleviate TMJ pain, headaches and migraines
  • Creating facial symmetry
  • Giving you a beautiful smile
  • Enhancing your confidence
